  • The Harvard Medical Center Office of Work and Family
    (617-432-1615) offers information and referrals on a wide spectrum of family-related issues ranging from prenatal exercise classes to elder care housing options. The office provides lists of child care centers, openings in family child care homes in the area, summer camps, after-school child care and more. The office distributes the Harvard University and Affiliates Family Resource Handbook, a useful collection of information on many family resources in the greater Boston area, and schedules lunch-time seminars for parents on a variety of topics. There are six Harvard University affiliated child care centers, all of them in Cambridge, and seven child care centers in the Longwood Area. Information about these centers and family child care in the area or in your community can be obtained by calling the Office of Work and Family. Monthly workshops and support groups for those caring for their elderly family members or friends are also sponsored by the office.

Child Care Subsidies

Harvard Child Care Scholarship Fund
Financial assistance is available for full and/or part-time childcare for children up to kindergarten age, after-school care children of kindergarten age and older, summer day camp, school vacation programs and in-home childcare. You must be a Harvard University benefits-eligible postdoc working 17.5 hours per week to apply.

Note: Different scholarship funds are available to the different employee groups at Harvard. Application deadlines and award periods vary and typically run from spring through fall.

HMS Child Care Scholarship Fund

Scholarships are awarded each fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Applications are available in April and due the first part of May each year. Applications are obtainable in the human resources office. Call 617-432-2035

Family Leave Options (Maternity And Parental Leaves)

These policies apply to benefits-eligible postdocs. (For more information on benefits-eligibility, please see our Benefits section.)

Harvard's 13 week maternity leave policy for birth mothers begins with the birth of the child and includes up to 8 week's paid leave under the Short Term Disability Plan, 4 weeks of Parental leave for the primary caregiver and 1 week of accrued time (vacation, sick, personal etc.).

Two options for parental leave are available to birth or adoptive parents. Up to 4 weeks of paid parental leave is available to be taken within the 13 weeks following birth or placement for adoption.

Option #1: One week of leave paid at 100% of the current rate of pay;
Option #2: Four weeks of leave paid according to the following University service-related pay replacement schedule:
Employees with 7 or more years of service are paid at 100% of current rate of pay.
Employees with fewer than 7 years of service are paid at 75% of current pay rate. Employees paid at 75% may supplement their pay with accrued vacation, personal days or compensatory bank.
