Advanced Elocution Training (AET) Program

A program for intensive English elocution training

Please note: The next cycle of advanced elocution training will be offered in Spring, 2010.

The Office for Postdoctoral Affairs, in collaboration with Harvard's Office of Human Resources Bridge to Learning and Literacy Program, is offering a pilot program in elocution training, designed to provide an opportunity for non-native English speakers to get comprehensive training to improve speaking and verbal presentation skills. The course consists of intensive two-hour sessions weekly for 12 weeks that focus on understanding and practicing formation of words, developing proper speaking skills, and working to establish consistency of speaking style when using the English language.

Eligibility is limited to current Harvard University postdoctoral fellows, including FAS, HSPH, the Cambridge professional schools, and HMS/HSDM 'quad' postdocs (postdoctoral fellows whose primary affilations are with teaching hospitals are not eligible for this program.) The program is intended for non-native English speakers who have considerable difficulty being understood and have had very little training or opportunities to practice spoken English.

The program is competitive, and five openings for postdoctoral fellows are available in the current cycle. Applications will be reviewed by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Bridge Program, and selection will be based on the description of current research activities, how participating in the course will enhance professional goals, and evidence of need as supported by the principal investigator/research sponsor (or other research mentor).
